Engineering Services Examination

IES officers are selected by
the union government on the recommendations made by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A combined three-
stage competitive examination (comprising five tests), called the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is conducted by
the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.

Description

it is conducted in three phases - a preliminary examination
consisting of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper I and Technical Paper 2 Branch wise also popularly known
as (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics and Telecommunications) and a main examination consisting of Four papers of
conventional (essay) type, followed by a personality test (interview).ESE is considered as one of the toughest examinations
in India. IES officers carry high respect and status and are mandated to manage and execute activities in diverse technical
and managerial fields. They administer a broad segment of the public sector economy, which constitutes of Power, Indian
Railways, Defense service of Engineers, Central Water engineering, Central Engineering Service, Telecommunications, etc.
All appointments to the Group A services are made by the President of India.




Recruitment on the results of this examination will be made to the Services/ Posts under the following categories:
Category-I : Civil Engineering.
Category-II : Mechanical Engineering.
Category-III : Electrical Engineering.
Category-IV : Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
The number of vacancies to be filled on the results of the examination is expected to be approximately 495 including
21 vacancies for the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) (03 vacancies for Low Vision, 11 vacancies for
Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy & 07 vacancies for
Hard of Hearing). The number of vacancies is liable to alteration.
Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes,
Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Physically Disabled Category in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the
Government of India.
