“Books vs Screen”

Group Discussion Preparation

1. Introductory Structure
Typical introduction to every group discussion should carry the following essential points:
• Greetings to everyone
• Introduce the topic
• Give the general meaning/ definition/ any introductory line related to the topic
• Provide various dimensions of the topic if you can, classifications, types etc. This provides the broad headings under which the topic should be discussed such as pros, cons, advantages, disadvantages etc
• Your opinion (are you in favor or against that topic, you may take one side or both sides)
• Open the house for discussion

2. Body Part
• Start discussion on the points as per direction provided in the introduction
• Initially cover all the important points which you can talk about
• Try to cover each dimension of the topic such as pros and cons
• Try to seek clarification from other members by asking them questions related to what they said, this helps you to be in discussion
• Ask questions from others, this helps to make others silent and listen to your point
• Provide examples to support your view, examples may be from real life of otherwise
• Try to use these sentences: I don’t agree with you, I agree with your view, let me add to what you just said, why do you think this is the case, friends let me provide you one data, friends let me quote the lines of Gandhi ji
• Friends if you allow me then I want to put forth my point
• Friends you will agree with me that ……
• Let me tell u an incident or story….
• Try to enter min 3 times during discussion

3. Conclusion Structure
The conclusion of GD is the conclusion of entire group and it must contain the points provided by each member. Make sure you have jotted down the important points said by members
• On behalf of everyone, I would like to take the initiation to conclude the discussion
• It was quite a healthy/fruitful/ all members exchanged their viewpoint
• We could reach consensus/ though we could not reach any consensus but important points were discussed
• Discuss some quotes/ viewpoints of your mates which you find quite good, try to mention the points which you have jotted down
• Go for a very neutral ending; as a coin has got two sides, similarly one must look towards the positive sides and try to learn from the negative ones.
• Thankyou

“Books vs Screen”

INTRODUCTION
• Good morning everyone, my name is Shubhya, let me introduce the topic to all of you
• The topic of today’s discussion is “Books vs screen”
• So, it certainly can lead to a good debate between bookworms, and screen lovers. there can be people who weigh one over the other, and for some it can pave a way equally.
• Let’stake into consideration the broad perspective, and look forward to channelize this discussion focusing on detailed advantages and disadvantages of both.
• In my opinion, books are certainly man’s best friend and they can be preferred over screens any time any day.
• But we must look forward towards the opinion of everyone
• Friends lets start the discussion and contribute your valuable opinions.

Body
In favor of books:
1. While reading a book, we face least distractions which might not be the case when we are reading from the screen. The kind of notifications pop up on the screen affect our reading ability. Books can contribute in building deep reading skills and even sharpen our recall abilities.
2. Due to increase in screen time, students have faced lots of issues in their eyesight; as compared to books, which causes less eye strain.
3. A book gives us a sense of belongingness, the irreplaceable experience which students get in connection with books can never match with screens.
4. Undoubtedly books require less maintenance as no internet connection is needed, and we do not even need to charge them.
5. Books have our full attention, and we meet less distractions thus, these have the potential to reduce the stress. And this is the reason, books are called as man’s best friend.
6. Digital access leads to less cognitive patience, even slower down the deeper process of brain that affects its retention, comprehension, and focus. Books serve as a better help while focusing on this mode.

In favor of screen:
1. screens are travel friendly and cost effective, the content provided on internet or be it e-books is quite cheaper with respect to physical books.
2. Screens come as a convenient option for all, books are hard to carry as they can be heavier and bulkier to transport, which certainly is not the case in screens.
3. While reading from screens, we get multiple built in features, be it highlighting a text, bookmark the pages, increase the text size, change its colour scheme or even while you have to surf for specific words.
4. The people who are visually impaired, screens can be stated as a savior for them, as they are quite inclusive and carry text-to speech feature, which certainly helps them to understand the text and enjoy the content.
5. Even pages being used in terms of books, impact huge cutting of trees, which is not the case while working on screens.
6. Even students suffering from dyslexia can have digital complementary programs for their kids to practice.

Conclusion
• Friends let me conclude the topic on behalf of entire group.
• We had a fruitful discussion and be it books or screens, it completely depends on individual’s preference.
• Their can be those who feel a sense of comfort while reading through traditional books, on the other hand screens provide an access to read and grasp the information on digital mode.
• ……….
• Thank You
